In your opinion, do you need a degree to get your first job in tech?

My answer is yes but with a caveat. You don't need a CS degree to get your first job. You need a bachelor's degree and proof that you are pivoting to tech (certificates, projects, etc.) Unfortunately, in my experience, you cannot be taken seriously in tech without a bachelor's degree.

What do you think? I would love to know your answers and experiences. Post in the comments below.

I don't think it's totally impossible to get into tech without a degree, but it's harder the farther you are from having a CS degree. I only have a 2-year diploma and I've done pretty well, but the college I went to had a good reputation in my city. And it's shitty but let's be honest, it's easier for me because I'm white. White men can get away with being totally self-taught, but black people of any gender and especially black women have to look so much more qualified on paper and just be so much better.

This! I definitely see the racial component in this. My friends in tech who are white have a much easier time breaking in and advancing quickly than me. Thank you for your response.
