This is a great article and you make 5 great points. I'd like to add one which would be part of your Start Small: Write A Complete App (Single Page App).
The reason I think newbies should attempt to write a complete app so they'll stay motivated and learn the extra / side items that they might otherwise miss. Plus writing an entire app is very rewarding.
