learning to code (part one of many)

hello codenewbie world!

i'm sheila, a student of frontend development and aspiring full-time web developer. i currently live in new york city and have no technical background whatsoever! in my free time i enjoy cooking, reading, and walking through the park. i've previously worked as a restaurant hostess and server, nonprofit program assistant, and i have two degrees in the liberal arts (anthropology and history).

i've been studying frontend dev for about six months now, and finally pushed myself to start blogging my journey. many people have said that this is a great way to reinforce your learning, stay accountable to your goals, track your progress, and build your community!

i'm a student at skillcrush and i'm about halfway through taking my introduction to javascript course. actually, it's my second time taking the course. the first time, i panic-rushed through it and didn't properly absorb anything, so when the time came to build final projects on my own i was totally lost. i decided to slow down and start over without rushing myself, and so far so good! i've been internalizing the material much more and can tell i am gaining a much better understanding.

what am i learning today?

  • finished the second half of a lesson on scope (let vs. const, global scope vs. block scope vs. function scope)
  • this lesson also practiced querySelectorAll(), createElement(), Math objects, and lots of other fun stuff we learned in previous lessons
  • built a program to invite guests to a potluck and then randomly assign them dishes to bring

i'm going to start the next lesson today as well, which will focus on objects and methods.

if you are also starting your journey into web development, hello! feel free to reach out - i am always looking for accountability buddies and companions in the coding journey.

Congrats Sheila on your first post. I'm an intermediate level Coder. I've designed websites before but it was back in the 90's. That's why I say I'm intermediate. By today's standards I would be considered a newbie. At any rate, I'm updating my skillset. I'm still on HTML 5 and CSS 3. I plan on updating JavaScript around the first of the year.

P.S. Am a self taught Coder. I use free tools to learn.
