How to Know if a Vehicle is Linked to a Company in the RUNT?

Have you ever tried to sell, transfer, or update your vehicle registration only to face unexpected issues? In Colombia, many drivers discover that their car, motorcycle, or truck appears in the RUNT (National Single Transit Registry) under a company’s name instead of their own—often without realizing it. This can limit transactions, create extra tax responsibilities, and even lead to fines. So, how can you confirm the real status of your vehicle?

Step-by-Step Guide to Verifying Your Vehicle Registration in the RUNT

1. Access the Official RUNT Website
Visit the official RUNT website: www.runt.com.co. This is the only portal authorized by the Colombian government to verify vehicle registrations.

2. Select “Citizen Inquiry”
Locate the "Citizen Query by License Plate" or "Vehicle Query" option. This section allows you to check vehicle information using the license plate or VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

3. Enter Vehicle Data
Provide the required information:

License plate number
VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
Type of Document (Cedula or NIT)
Document Number
Click “Consult” to continue.

4. Review the Ownership Information
The system will display details such as:

Name of the Owner or Entity (Company or Individual)
Registration Status
Validity of SOAT and Technical Inspection
Outstanding Fines or Violations
If the vehicle owner is a business (e.g., rental companies, logistics, or transportation fleets), your vehicle is registered in the name of a commercial entity.

5. How to Unlink a Vehicle from a Company?
If you discover that your car, motorcycle, or truck is incorrectly registered to a company, follow these steps:

A. Gather the Required Documents
Copy of SOAT (Mandatory Traffic Accident Insurance)
Original Ownership Card
ID/NIT (Identification of the current owner)
Certificate of Tradition and Freedom of the Vehicle
B. Go to a Transit Office (Mobility Secretariat)
Go to the nearest service point authorized by the RUNT.

C. Request Property Correction
Submit an application to update your ownership. This process may require:

A notarized bill of sale (if the company sold the vehicle)
A company disassociation document (if it no longer belongs to the entity)
D. Pay Applicable Fees
Administrative fees vary depending on the local Mobility Secretariat, with costs ranging from COP 30,000 to COP 100,000.

6. Confirm the Update
After completing the process, check the RUNT por placa again within 24 to 48 hours to verify that your ownership has been updated correctly.
