cybeartron profile image

what is the difference between and codenewbie?

michaeltharrington profile image
Michael Tharrington

Fantastic question!

For starters, both DEV and the CodeNewbie community site (this site ๐Ÿ™‚) are built on the Forem platform, so there are some obvious overlaps there.

Also, DEV acquired CodeNewbie at the start of 2020, so CodeNewbie is managed by the same team that manages DEV.

The difference between CodeNewbie and DEV is that CodeNewbie is specifically geared toward offering content for new developers. Not long ago, CodeNewbie launched the CodeNewbie Challenge 2021 meant specifically to encourage and help beginning devs. We also just announced CodeLand 2021 which is a conference geared toward early-career programmers and their mentors.

So, CodeNewbie is really trying to fill the space specifically for new, beginner devs. Also, because is a newer site, the community is still much smaller. There are fewer posts in play on CodeNewbie than DEV.

With all of this being said, DEV is still very newbie-friendly as well. This is partly due to the friendly community that DEV has built up over the years โ€” take a read of the DEV Community Code of Conduct and you'll find that we strongly encourage for folks to treat each other kindly and welcome folks from all backgrounds. Setting this tone early on (and strongly enforcing the CoC) really helped to shape the conversations on DEV and I think encouraged the newbie-friendly atmosphere.

All in all, there is a lot of overlap between DEV and CodeNewbie, but CodeNewbie is aimed more toward beginner devs than DEV.

I don't know much but as I understood, Codenewbie is more friendly and closer to newbies rather than the platform. Yeah is also friendly to newbies but Codenewbie does that a lil bit closer.
Addition to that both Codenewbie and are powered by Forem so both platform looks similar.

Hope my answer helped you even a little :)

Hey @ajhalili2006 , welcome to the CodeNewbie community ๐Ÿ‘‹

Thanks for letting us know about your disappointment regarding CodeLand's timings.

I'm grateful you gave us the opportunity to clarify for you that there will be a combination of live and asynchronous content ๐ŸŽ‰ (We will have threads here on CodeNewbie about the content so anyone tuning in async will be able to take part in the discussions! ๐Ÿ˜Š)

More details are coming soon about how pre-recorded and live elements will mix, so stay tuned to the CodeLand website for more details. We know thereโ€™s a strong interest in the conference from CodeNewbies in Asia-Pacific timezones, and weโ€™ll definitely have more details out soon about specifically what that conference experience would look like for those who canโ€™t join for the live portions.

Feel free to drop any further questions you have about CodeLand in the CodeLand announcement post!

I just joined this community and I am excited to engage with everyone here creatively.

I am here to network and learn more about JavaScript, html, CSS, and React.

I know 80% of whatever I learned about, but I still feel as if I only know 50%. I need help !
If you are in Atlanta please hmu; we can help each other.
I am looking for a professional network seriously!

Personally, I'm a little more interested in backend stuff, but happy to help you any way I can. Are you connected with TAG (Technology Association of Georgia)? There's also an Atlanta Developers Facebook group that might be helpful. Curious where you work, or if you're running your own business?

Thank you for reply! I am not owning a business or work at the moment. For the past two years before may 15 this year I was working as Math and Science teacher at a private school southwest of Atlanta. I felt like I need more than just math and science teacher, so I resigned from my job and start learning JavaScript, html, CSS, and now React. I am still very new in this kind of thing; I don't have supporting system other than websites. I need someone to guide me and give the ins and out of the industry. I will appreciate your help. My real name is Rama Hawai. Educationally wise I have a degree in Applied Mathematics; I majored in Math and minored in computer science.

swvangil profile image

Understand. Thanks, Rama. If I had one recommendation, it would be to take one of the web developer masterclasses on Udemy. There are several that are excellent, but this one seems to have the best connection to the industry: This course should cost about $15, as it goes on sale regularly at this price. I also subscribed to the "Zero to Mastery" newsletters - they continuously update me on the industry. This one from Angela Yu is also excellent - everything she teaches is amazing. You might check these out and see what you think:

swvangil profile image

One other thing: Something I've learned whether you're studying web development, Python, or something else: You NEED to have a real project to create. The courses have interesting sample projects that are quite good, but I always try to make them my own by creating something I really want to use. For example, in my last Python course, the sample project was to call an API that found cheap flight deals to anywhere in the world. i added my own enhancement and voice-enabled the entire thing, so that I got an audible report in addition to the screen information. If you make these projects your own, you will learn more, it will be more fun, and you'll have something interesting and useful when you're done. Stay in touch and good luck!

I have become obsessed with learning more about coding and also obsessed with the podcast. Now I have decided to pursue a career change. I've been in the food/retail space for 17 years and I just cant do it anymore lol. I just bought the 100 days of Python course by Angela Yu which has encouraged me to try the 100 days of code challenge that I will begin tomorrow. Hello from New Mexico, thatโ€™s a state in the USA! I am excited to join this community. I love to learn new things. So when an opportunity came long early this year for me to learn to build a WordPress website, I jumped in with enthusiasm and loved it. From there I have tried to learn some HTML and CSS. However, the big adventure was this summer, when I started to learn Python with my 13-year-old daughter. I had planned on learning JavaScript, but itโ€™s not as teenager friendly as Python. The Python course I found on Udemy, while not for teens specifically, covered many things she loves. So we started to learn Python together over the summer and completed 50 days of code. It was so much fun talking coding with her over breakfast and coding together in the afternoons. However, she is back in school and has a responsibility to learn algebra and physics so her Python lessons are on hold briefly. I suspect she will find a way to work Python into her classes, but in the meantime I find myself without my โ€˜coding buddyโ€™. I also have found I am not as motivated to get myself back into learning Python or the JavaScript since she went back to school. Its fun to work with others. So I am joining the coding challenge and look forward to reading post and sharing progress with other in this community. Happy Coding!

Thank you!

Welcome to the community, Furkan! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
Both CodeNewbie and DEV are part of Forem. Hope that could answer your question about the designs โ˜บ

The big difference is contents in DEV are for all level of devs, while CodeNewbie gears towards newbies in programming world, such as people who are still learning and early career devs.

I don't really call myself a developer I have a deep understanding and I've done research for years and I've dabbled with plenty of virtual machines and other environments but I've never really worked on an active project I just don't think or have a thought process to where I feel comfortable as if I'm ready. I've been mainly dabbling with front end and back end web development and data analysis of my own small projects and tasks here and there. Sorry if there's others like me or others with the patience for people like me I'm all ears and excited to seek new opportunities and adventures as I dig deeper into the understanding and concept of development.

Hi there,
First of all, I do know very little about coding.
That's the reason why I'm here.

Also, I need to understand devs minds, cos I need it in my job.
I've recently come across a no-code/low-code attitude (using API calls), and I wonder if anybody can clarify it. What does it mean for the future of coding?

Matt here. I found you through Compassionate Coding after having sought out help on other forums that always left me solution and bitter about the way I was treated.

I'm mainly a hobbyist who bashes through things that interest me but I've always had my eye on wanting to learn more and maybe try a career switch. I'm not good enough to pass coding bootcamp entrance exams, but have developed solutions a PhD in computer science said couldn't be done after I offered to pay for his services. Even the few coding courses when I got my mechanical engineering degree were taught by condescending personalities who would rather watch me suffer for hours chasing down everything else but the missing semi colon that was giving me problems in the first place.
