This brings to mind my experience getting into the role I have now. I had two interviews in three days, both with "homework" and a presentation of said homework. I poured my time into the first interview's assignment only to find that the job title was heavily misleading and to have interviewers who sent all the non-verbals of "this is wasting my time".

I was shaken and in no state to do my assignment for my second interview. I let my HR contact for that org know that I would be withdrawing from consideration, but my future supervisor said that I should still come in. Even without the assignment done, I was able to demonstrate what I knew by conversation and was hired, so not completing the assignment hadn't been as much of a nail in the coffin as I felt it would be.
