Great post. Thank you.

I want to see people and not candidates.

I completely agree on this. Having also worked on the hiring end I recognize how hard this goal of seeing people and not candidates can be with a minimal number of applicants, and my understanding is that these departments have been swamped with applicants. As an active applicant myself one of the frustrating realities (particularly in the midst of this pandemic) is how much empathy I have for the recruiters and HR people involved in the process, understanding keenly why they're unable to do this in most cases.

I want to see the value put on communication.

Yes! This is one of the discouraging things about many of the 3rd party hiring tools that provide no-reply email addresses and automated responses to applicants. Again, I recognize the potential need in this particular period of time and have empathy for the hiring teams, but removing the possibility of communicating is a choice that I find extremely unfortunate.

I want to see people and organizations who have the ability to mentor and support to do it.

Me too! Where are these orgs? Also, having done a great deal of onboarding and training for other companies I've always found the idea that anyone comes in not needing mentorship and support (of some kind) to be a complete myth―the who's, how's, why's, where's and what's are different for every job (and often change on-the-job).

I didn’t have a take-home test or a whiteboard interview. I had a conversation.

These have always been the best situations. There's obviously a scaling problem as organizations get bigger, but this should always be the goal.

Thanks for your thoughts on this!

Kyle
