If I could only recommend one thing, I would say

Ubuntu is an easy type/flavor/version ;)) (or distribution) of Linux.
In a nutshell, Ubuntu gives you a whole 'new computer' to play with.

  • It's FREE.
  • It has tons of FREE software that is used by software developers and engineers. You can easily load updated versions of Python, Ruby, and any language, Even tons of help.
  • I like Ubuntu for a couple of reasons; The number of people that use it is HUGE. So you can usually find info on anything, even when things go wrong. haha
  • Check out the Community on the Ubuntu page. Tons of info!

When I started I learned by breaking things (but in a good way) and then learned how to fix my mistakes.
Have fun!
