Fantastic question!

For starters, both DEV and the CodeNewbie community site (this site 🙂) are built on the Forem platform, so there are some obvious overlaps there.

Also, DEV acquired CodeNewbie at the start of 2020, so CodeNewbie is managed by the same team that manages DEV.

The difference between CodeNewbie and DEV is that CodeNewbie is specifically geared toward offering content for new developers. Not long ago, CodeNewbie launched the CodeNewbie Challenge 2021 meant specifically to encourage and help beginning devs. We also just announced CodeLand 2021 which is a conference geared toward early-career programmers and their mentors.

So, CodeNewbie is really trying to fill the space specifically for new, beginner devs. Also, because community.codenewbie.org/ is a newer site, the community is still much smaller. There are fewer posts in play on CodeNewbie than DEV.

With all of this being said, DEV is still very newbie-friendly as well. This is partly due to the friendly community that DEV has built up over the years — take a read of the DEV Community Code of Conduct and you'll find that we strongly encourage for folks to treat each other kindly and welcome folks from all backgrounds. Setting this tone early on (and strongly enforcing the CoC) really helped to shape the conversations on DEV and I think encouraged the newbie-friendly atmosphere.

All in all, there is a lot of overlap between DEV and CodeNewbie, but CodeNewbie is aimed more toward beginner devs than DEV.

Nope, I did not! I'm one of the least technical team members. 😅

That said, I have put in my fair share of feature requests and bug reports.
