Ah ok, Yes Hackathons are quite cool actually they are pretty much just like what you described with your partner-ups/collabs but condensed into a 5 day project format.
Everyone has there own tasks to handle on github and we pretty much have a daily call in the evening and sometimes morning to breakdown what we will do for the project until completion.
I will be joining another one at the end of this month, I'm going to try and participate in a few early this year to try and get my Developer team-building skills up! 😄

I can definitely relate on the pair-programming experience.
I have recently felt this while working on Hackathon in October.
I can agree with the sentiment that you should ask within a 30minute-1hour time period once you get stuck and not leave it for days.
