Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) has taunted Tottenham with 'reverse drama'. But Tottenham's 'irrefutable' claim is more talked about.
Tottenham and Leicester City kicked off the 2024-2025 English Premier League (EPL) season at the King Power Stadium in Leicester, England, on Tuesday (Aug. 20). The teams played to a 1-1 draw in the opening round. Tottenham took the lead in the 29th minute through Pedro Foro. Vardy equalized 12 minutes into the second half.
Vardy, who started the game, was substituted in the 34th minute. Vardy was booed by the Spurs away fans as he slowly walked off the field. He got into an argument with Spurs center back Christian Romero.
An agitated Vardy pointed to the EPL logo on the right sleeve of his jersey and held up his right index finger to emphasize the number one. He then turned to the Tottenham fans and made a '0' with his thumb and index finger.
The EPL era began in 1992. Leicester City bounced between the first and second divisions, but won the EPL title in a fairytale 2015-2016 season. Tottenham, on the other hand, has been in and out of the βbig fourβ but never at the top of the EPL.
The last time Spurs won the title in the pre-EPL era was in the 1960-1961 season, more than half a century ago. Their last trophy was the League Cup in the 2007-2008 season. Leicester City, on the other hand, have a very different history.
Vardy was the man who led Leicester City to the title. He led the offense with 24 goals and 6 assists. λ©μ΄μ μ¬μ΄νΈ Vardy"s soccer life is a drama in itself. He"s a mythical figure who started out in the amateur eighth division and ended up in the first division.
In the lower leagues, he even played βtwo jobsβ in a factory because he couldn't make ends meet on his salary. Vardy was also capped by England, scoring seven goals in 26 appearances.
Leicester City finished the 2022-2023 season in 18th place and were relegated to the Championship (Second Division). The second division was enough for one season. They won the Championship and returned to the EPL this season.
Vardy stayed loyal to Leicester City, extending his contract in the process. He even scored a goal in his return to the EPL. His eighth goal of the season against Tottenham reaffirmed his form.
βFrom the first half to the 60th minute, we continued to dominate and control the game,β Son told Mixzone after the game. In fact, I think we made a few mistakes in our decision-making when we went to the final area and picked the area inside the penalty box. It was the same with the crosses, we created a lot of chances, but there were some indecisions in those situations. I think we made it a little bit difficult for them because they had the belief and the idea that they could keep playing, so I think we made it a little bit difficult for them.β
Head coach Enze Postecoglou added: βIt's a disappointing result. We were dominant in the first half, but we were lacking in finishing. The second half was similar. We dominated the first 15-20 minutes but lacked the finishing touch, but the thing about a 1-0 score is that you always have a chance to make a comeback.β βThat's what happened and we lost our way in the next 15-20 minutes. We lost our composure, and the home crowd was on Leicester's side. We lacked sharpness in the final third, and we made a few bad decisions. I'm really disappointed that our football didn't get the reward it deserved,β he said.
