Hi there, I'm Julia π
I am working on my portfolio for just too long. When I saw this challenge by CodeNewbie Community, it just felt like the perfect challenge for me. Getting all the information on how to best find a job, working with other developers at the same stage, and get their insights, I learned a lot from it. π
Background
I first got into programming when doing an internship at the University of Vienna while studying Japanese studies. With a small team of students, we created a (WordPress) website for a lecture about 150 years of relations between Japan and Austria. This internship made me realize how much I enjoyed working with programming languages as well as learning languages in general. After graduating a year ago, I started learning HTML/CSS/JavaSript on my own and here I am. π
Progress
I am really close to my goal. Since January I started learning React and Google Firebase and want to deepen my knowledge in these two areas. I am almost finished with my portfolio and should be ready to apply for jobs starting in July. π
Takeaways, Learnings, and Growth
I am very aware of where I am right now, meaning, how much do I know, what I have to improve on, etc. I do record my process since January because this was the time when coding felt real (I was working with a team of four developers on a "Smart" React App, storing data in Google Firebase), and with this experience in mind, I feel very excited getting my first job. This challenge helped me once more to make things clear on what it takes to get a job, and how to make it into the web development area. π₯³
Sticking to it
For me, it is easy to stick to my plans. I have many side projects in my mind to keep on learning. But for now, I will study my four main projects to kind of fully understand them, to be able to talk about the code I used, finishing my portfolio in mid-June to start job hunting in July. πͺ
Overall Reflections
I am glad that I was not alone facing this challenge and it motivated me to go throw the #CNC2021 with others together. What I like most about this web development is to be able to meet people from all over the world. β€οΈ
What's next for me
Job hunting of course π After finding my first job, I might start taking a look into other areas of web development, but for now I want to deepen my knowledge in the tech stack I know so far.
