About Common Room

We gave it away in the title, but now we get to add a little more pizzazz: Common Room is the intelligent community growth platform that makes it easy for organizations and their DevRel teams to get closer to their communities.

We unify community engagement, product usage, and customer data into a single place, and use intelligence to surface actionable insights. With Common Room, DevRel teams quickly understand what’s happening in their communities — across GitHub, StackOverflow, Meetup, Slack, Discord, Reddit, Twitter, Dev.to and more — so they can monitor community health, find product champions, source and amplify content, and build internal advocacy all with the goal of shaping and shipping better products and experiences for their communities (many of which you’re likely a part of now or will be in the future!).

CR Product Overview

Why we support CodeLand

Our whole company vision centers on a fundamental tenet: The belief that building community is not only important, but imperative, to building successful organizations that actually ship products and experiences community members, customers, contributors, creators, and champions love.

So we’re beyond glad to support CodeLand and the coders, builders, developers, dreamers, students, teachers, engineers, and community members and leaders it brings together. Connecting communities, co-building roadmaps, elevating ideation around products and features, exchanging knowledge—it’s all integral to creating and sustaining thriving communities and the companies that build great products with and for them.

This is a really cool product! As for the questions:

  1. I'm part of the 100devs community on discord and twitter and it's been great. Every day I get to see people building cool projects, and I've been able to answer a lot of people's js questions, which is so rewarding.
  2. My learning focus right now is on SQL, but in the future I'd also love to dig deeper into testing.
  3. Probably Vercel. Really cool tools, and they make their cutting edge tech super user-friendly.

Amazing! Thank you for sharing about your experiences with community, Robert 🎉

Congrats on all the impact you've had on others in the 100devs community. The fulfillment people get from answering people's questions and helping others is one of my favorite aspects of community 🙏

And +1 on Vercel--I'm especially impressed with how collaborative and diverse their community is 🌎

The most impactful community I'm a part of is CodeNewbie. CodeNewbie is awesome because the support they provide to new developers with the podcast to the CodeNewbie challenges. It is a great positive place where new developers can connect and help each other. I also love how CodeNewbie is always looking for new ways to support devs any way they can.

I'd like to learn more about developer relations. I've seen a lot things related to developer relations online this year so next year I'd like to take some time to explore that a bit more.

I admire a lot of of the companies and organizations that are out there helping girls and women learn how to code. I especially admire Girls Who Code and specifically their mission because this is an organization I wished was around when I was younger since that would have helped me discover coding sooner. A company I also admire Skillcrush because they believe tech is for everyone and this belief is felt in everything they have done from the courses they created to the blog posts they have written.

I love Girls Who Code! It's such an amazing organization.

Developer Relations is a really exciting space 😊 We hosted a bookclub with Mary Thengvall about her book "The Business Value of Developer Relations," where she talks about some key topics from her book, like the value of developer communities and her "DevRel Mantra." If you want to check it out, you can watch it here: commonroom.io/blog/uncommon-book-c...

Sounds like CodeNewbie has delivered tremendous value to you! I love to see this!
During my time at Webflow, our team worked directly with Girls Who Code to develop a summer immersion program that I believe is currently underway now! What a rewarding experience and amazing organization! 🙂

I’ve just started volunteering with Code the Dream and I love that they focus on helping individuals from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds get into the tech industry. In addition to practicing my fullstack development chops with Rails and Ruby, I want to go more in-depth with SQL and learn more backend tech like Node.js and Express. I’m also learning Python, too lol. So many interesting things! Thank you for sponsoring this awesome event 😊

Most impactful community is the tech community on Twitter in general. In the next few years I want to call myself an Accessibility and React Frontend Developer, who talks and share advice on how to make websites and application accessible for everyone.

Because of this, I admire Microsoft a lot, because their accessibility engagement is just so amazing. I also admire dev.to and CodeNewbie because they do a lot for the tech community and especially beginners and selftaught developers, without them, I would not be were I am today.

One thing I would love to learn in the next year is to have the confidence of creating a full stack app from conception to deployment. I know I am capable, after marrying to Stack Overflow, Googling, Youtubing, and deep diving documentations, but I'd love to have that automation where I can just whip up a protoype and keep building on it with ferocity and focus.

One company that I admire is Pixar. It's an environment about creating powerful storytelling and powerful narratives is what changes the world so I strive to embed that element in my coding craftsmanship and journey.

Blockchain and web3 development is in such an exciting place right now! One thing which I'm especially impressed by is how many of these companies have taken a community-native approach to their growth.

Being a Python dev, PyLadies has been an impactful community. I started and organized a Miami chapter, which has now been absorbed into one "South Florida PyLadies" group, due to the fact that I was co-hosting the Meetups with PyLadies SWFL. Highly recommend getting involved with this international community!

The most impactful community that I've been apart of so far is 100Devs and CodeNewbie.

What I would love to learn within the next year is how to build within Web3, make Discord bots and automation tools.

A company that I admire is Signal because I love how they enhance the protection of communications for activists around the world.

+1 on the excitement around learning and building within Web3. Common Room partners with many Web3 communities. It's been fun with work through some of the challenges and considerations unique to the Web3 space--especially around the idea of protecting users' anonymity or pseudonymity, while balancing the community needs around fostering healthy discussions. 1. Virtual Coffee; Virtual Coffee is a safe, supportive and welcoming community for developers at all levels. I have grown so much, beyond what I imagined, since I joined them ❤
  2. Community-building & content creation — technical writing in particular! I start to lurk in the DevRel field since I'm active in several communities (including CodeNewbie!) and do tech blogging.
  3. I don't have a particular company. But I admire companies that focus on people-first and value inclusivity.
