Son Heung-min's future is in question
“Tottenham have triggered Son Heung-min's option and are looking to extend or add to his contract,” Tottenham's dedicated journalist Pete O'Rourke reported on Tuesday.
Earlier, the British media had claimed that Tottenham would not sign Son Heung-min to an extension, but would simply trigger his option. For example, The Athletic analyzed Tottenham's squad in an article titled “Tottenham squad overhaul: Which positions do they need to strengthen, and who could leave?” on April 29.
Son Heung-min's name came up first. “Son enjoyed a resurgence last season, and he remains essential as captain,” the publication said, emphasizing his importance. However, Tottenham are not looking to re-sign Son right now. “Tottenham will also exercise the option to extend Son's contract,” says The Athletic. The option would tie him to the club until 2026,” according to The Athletic.
In fact, there are few players in Tottenham's offense that can be counted on right now. Johnson and Kuluczewski are younger and more of a future prospect, 안전놀이터 추천 but Spurs are willing to extend Son's contract for one more year.
Previously, Tottenham and Son seemed to be on the verge of signing a new deal. Since the middle of last season, it has been reported that Spurs have been in talks with Son Heung-min to extend his contract. Local British media outlets such as Football Insider and HITC have reported that Spurs have been in talks with Son since last summer and are planning to move forward with negotiations in earnest.
In fact, it was previously expected that Son would sign a new contract. In March, Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge said that Tottenham was in talks to renew his contract, saying that Son is a great ambassador off the field. With the Saudi Arabian league showing interest in Son again, Tottenham seemed to be in a hurry to move.
There are reports that the Saudis have offered him a salary in the region of £25 million. Naturally, his weekly wages at Tottenham were set to rise significantly. According to Football Insider, “Spurs are set to offer Son a ‘massive new contract’ with increased wages to reflect his new captaincy status.” Son currently earns a weekly wage of £190,000 (approximately $332.6 million).
However, if The Athletic's claims are true, Tottenham will be looking to reward him with a contract extension instead. Son Heung-min signed his second contract with Tottenham in 2021, signing a four-year deal. It included an option for Spurs to extend the contract by one year. Spurs intend to exercise it.
Of course, it's something that Son agreed to, so it's their right to exercise it. But it's also a bit of a disappointment. Son has been a key player for Tottenham for the past nine years, and in the 2023-2024 season, he was the team's top scorer in the Premier League (PL) with 17 goals and 10 assists. He also inherited the captain's armband, cementing his status as an undisputed superstar.
Some have argued that Tottenham made a calculated and smart move, and that they should have sold Son and pocketed the money for the future. There was even talk of exercising his option for a one-year extension and then re-signing him, or letting him go so they could win a title like Gareth Bale and Luka Modric. Some have even suggested that Son should work on his shooting, though it's unclear if this is true for Tottenham fans.
However, some have suggested that this won't be the end of the story. Pete O'Rourke, a journalist dedicated to Tottenham, reassured fans that “picking up Son's extension is the least Tottenham could do” and that “Tottenham want to keep him for longer.”
