Lionel Messi (37, Inter Miami), the "greatest player of all time," is dominating the American stage.
Inter Miami defeated Nashville 3-1 on Monday at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, behind a two-goal, one-assist performance from Messi in the ninth round of the 2024 MLS season. With 18 points, Miami moved into sole possession of the league lead.
Miami conceded an own goal in the first two minutes. But Messi was there. In the 11th minute, Messi's shot was saved by the goalkeeper. Suarez passed to Messi, who slid it back in to tie the game.
Messi's one-man show continued. In the 39th minute, Sergio Busquets headed home a corner kick from Messi. In the 36th minute of the second half, Messi finished off a penalty kick earned by Alfonso.
This season, Messi has been on a "crazy run" with nine goals and eight assists in nine games. μ€ν¬μΈ ν ν Miami has played more games than their rivals, but they are at the top of the league.
The trio of seniors who led Barcelona in their heyday are leading Miami side by side. Busquets, who scored his debut goal for Miami, said: "Messi sent me an exquisite corner kick. It was a few millimeters and it hit my head and it was a goal. I was lucky. I'm happy to score for the team. I'm even happier because it was Messi who put it up," he said with a big smile.
